Beyond Body and Mind: The Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model for True Healing
At Really Healed, we champion a holistic approach to well-being. We believe that true healing transcends the physical and mental realms, encompassing the entirety of the human experience – body, mind, and spirit. This philosophy is embodied in the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model, an extension of the traditional Biopsychosocial Model developed by Dr. George Engel. While Engel's model highlighted the interconnectedness of biological, psychological, and social factors in health, we at Really Healed recognize the crucial fourth dimension: the spirit.
What is the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model?
Imagine four interlocking circles. One represents biological factors: our genetic predispositions, physical health, neurochemistry, and physiological processes. The second encompasses psychological factors: our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, coping mechanisms, and mental health. The third signifies social factors: our relationships, cultural background, socioeconomic status, support systems, and environment. The fourth, and often overlooked, is the spiritual: our sense of purpose, meaning, connection to something greater than ourselves, values, beliefs, and sense of belonging.
This model posits that these four dimensions are inextricably linked. A change in one affects the others, creating a dynamic interplay that influences our overall health and well-being.
How Does it Work?
Consider someone experiencing chronic fatigue. Biologically, they might have a hormonal imbalance or nutritional deficiency. Psychologically, they might struggle with feelings of overwhelm or hopelessness. Socially, they might lack support from family or friends. However, the spiritual dimension adds another layer. Do they feel a lack of purpose? Do they feel disconnected from their inner self or a higher power? Addressing only the physical symptoms won’t lead to complete healing if the other dimensions are neglected.
As Carl Jung eloquently stated, "One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious." The Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model encourages us to confront all aspects of our being – the light and the shadow – to achieve true wholeness.
A Testimony of Transformation:
Sarah, a client at Really Healed, struggled with debilitating anxiety for years. “I felt trapped,” she shared. “My anxiety controlled every aspect of my life. I tried medication and therapy, which helped to some extent, but I still felt like something was missing.” Through our work together, we explored not only her psychological patterns and social stressors but also her spiritual connection. Sarah began practicing mindfulness, spending time in nature, and exploring her values. "Connecting with nature helped me feel grounded, and the mindfulness helped me calm my racing thoughts. I realised I had lost touch with what truly mattered to me." Sarah's journey highlights the transformative power of addressing all four dimensions. She found a sense of peace and resilience she hadn’t experienced before.
Tips for Integrating the Model into Your Life:
Biological: Prioritize sleep, nourish your body with whole foods, engage in regular physical activity, and consult healthcare professionals for any physical concerns.
Psychological: Practice self-compassion, develop healthy coping mechanisms, challenge negative thought patterns, and seek professional support if needed.
Social: Cultivate meaningful relationships, build a strong support network, participate in community activities, and set healthy boundaries.
Spiritual: Explore your values and beliefs, connect with nature, practice meditation or prayer (if it resonates), engage in creative expression, and find activities that give you a sense of purpose.
As Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist, wrote, "Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'." Cultivating a strong sense of purpose, a key component of the spiritual dimension, can provide resilience and strength during challenging times.
The Power of Wholeness
The Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model reminds us that true healing is not simply the absence of disease, but the presence of wholeness. It is about integrating all aspects of ourselves – body, mind, and spirit – to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
