Am I a Human Being or a Human Doing?

We all know what a human being is, right? It's the essence of our existence, the core of who we are. But in the whirlwind of daily life, do we truly live as human beings, or have we become primarily human doings?

This question, though seemingly simple, delves deep into the heart of our purpose and fulfillment.

What is Being?

  • Presence: Being is about being present in the moment. It's about savoring the taste of your coffee, truly listening to a loved one, and feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin.

  • Awareness: It's about cultivating awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations without judgment.

  • Acceptance: Being is about accepting yourself and your circumstances exactly as they are, without resistance or struggle.

  • Connection: It's about feeling connected to yourself, to others, and to the larger universe.

What is Doing?

  • Action: Doing is about taking action, achieving goals, and accomplishing tasks. It's about striving, achieving, and constantly moving forward.

  • External Focus: Doing often involves an external focus, driven by external validation, societal expectations, and the pursuit of achievements.

  • Mental Activity: Doing can be heavily reliant on mental activity, such as planning, analyzing, and problem-solving.

The Dangers of "Doing"

While "doing" is essential for navigating life, an excessive focus on it can lead to:

  • Stress and Anxiety: The constant pressure to achieve and perform can lead to chronic stress and anxiety.

  • Burnout: When "doing" becomes the primary focus, it can lead to exhaustion, both physical and mental.

  • Disconnection: An overemphasis on "doing" can disconnect us from ourselves, our loved ones, and the present moment.

  • Lack of Fulfillment: Despite achieving many goals, we may still feel empty and unfulfilled if we're not connected to our true essence as human beings.

Finding Balance

The key is to find a balance between "being" and "doing."

  • Mindfulness Practices: Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and yoga can cultivate mindfulness and bring you back to the present moment.

  • Nature Connection: Spending time in nature can help you reconnect with your inner self and the natural world.

  • Creative Outlets: Engage in activities that allow you to express yourself creatively, such as painting, writing, or playing music.

  • Mindful Movement: Incorporate mindful movement into your daily routine, such as walking, dancing, or tai chi.

  • Prioritize Self-Care: Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, such as spending time with loved ones, reading, or getting enough sleep.
